From the amazing momentum we saw with startups scaling and helping enterprise companies digitally transform, to the incredible work happening with startup enabling organizations developing top-notch ecosystems around the world, to the founders themselves, it has been an inspiring month. Let’s jump in.
Bartering is simple. Somebody has something you want, you have something that person wants and the bartering commences. Sounds simple. But let’s say you have a lemon, and someone else needs an apple. Last year, companies founded solely by women garnered only 2.3% of the total capital invested in venture-backed startups. M12 - Microsoft's Venture Fund - Microsoft's Venture Fund is partnering with Melinda Gates’ Pivotal Ventures and Mayfield Fund to invest $6 million in the best B2B startups, founded by women. One the eve of Startup Week in Edmonton, we announced a partnership with the city’s leading innovation hub, Startup Edmonton. The collaboration includes a multitude of events including recruitment showcases, underrepresented founder workshops, CTO dinners and a collection of lunch and learns. Unique to this partnership, Startup Edmonton will also be converting their internal café into the Microsoft for Startups Café.
On October 9th, the doors swung wide on our latest Microsoft Reactor housed in the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto. The grand opening event included a welcome reception which including a keynote from Chad Fowler, the General Manager and CTO of Microsoft for Startups.

Kicking off TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, we hosted over 300 hundred female entrepreneurs at a female founder reception. Defined Crowd CEO, Daniella Braga welcomed the attendees with an overview of how she used partnerships as a cornerstone of scaling her AI startup.
As part of the Highway to a Hundred Unicorns initiative Microsoft for Startups is engaging with innovators and entrepreneurs through a series of outreach programs across so-called second tier cities in India. The impetus on innovation and entrepreneurship in India is helping startups to stem from not just metropolitan hubs like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore, but also other Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. However, some of the key challenges in scaling their businesses include lack of cutting-edge technology support and dearth of mentorship from ecosystem players. In a bid to address these challenges, Microsoft for Startups has launched Highway to a Hundred Unicorns, a series of events dedicated to enabling these startups.
Microsoft for Startups Beijing announced 18 startups for the 2019 fall batch. For this new batch, we are the team welcomes founders from technology sets including AI, big data, AR/VR, autopilot, image recognition, construction robots and blockchain. In addition, many core founding members have also served as senior management at Microsoft, Alibaba, Huawei, Tesla, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sinotrans, Google, Goldman Sachs, SAP, Facebook, eBay, DHL and other well-known institutions at home and abroad.
Microsoft for Startups UK welcomed its last 2019 ScaleUp cohort on Friday 11th October for a full 4 months program with workshops and networking to meet one another!
The London team organized sessions for 14 amazing startups: Avora (UK), Causalens (UK), Digisoft.tv (Ireland), Globus.ai (Norway), Humio (UK), Hunit (Norway), Mainstreaming (Italy), MyCuJoo (Netherlands), Nova Leah (Ireland), Symaps.io (France), Peak.ai (UK), RecommenderX (Ireland), Sitemark (Belgium) and TurinTech (UK).
Also in London, Microsoft Future Decoded UK was an action packed event where AI was top of mind. Lucas Joppa, Chief Environmental Officer at Microsoft announced the second cohort of the AI for Good accelerator program which will focus on four key areas: Earth, Accessibility, Humanitarian Action and Cultural Heritage.
