Microsoft Boosts Innovation Protection for Startups
Today we announced an expansion to Azure IP Advantage. If you’re not familiar with the program, Azure IP Advantage extends the industry’s most comprehensive protection against intellectual property (IP) risks to startups using Azure. While innovative IP may be a large factor in the valuation of a startup, oftentimes they don’t have the resources to manage potential legal risk relative to larger organizations.
Building upon existing benefits including uncapped defense and indemnification coverage that extends to open source technology that powers Microsoft Azure services, such as Hadoop used for Azure HDInsight, today’s announcement includes new benefits for Azure IoT innovators and startups. Startups building on Azure don’t have to do or pay anything extra to receive the coverage.
- Access to 10,000 patents for customers using Azure to power IoT devices to defend themselves against intellectual property lawsuits. Startups can access the patents for defensive legal purposes.
- The ability for startups on Azure to acquire Microsoft patents for free to help boost their business. In addition to the general features of the program, qualified startups who join the LOT Network can acquire 3 Microsoft patents through LOT in technical areas including artificial intelligence, multimedia, and security.
- Uncapped indemnification coverage for Microsoft’s Azure Sphere and IoT. Today’s expansion brings uncapped indemnification coverage to Azure Sphere and Windows IoT, including the open source software incorporated by Microsoft in these products.
